  • Use those details to distinguish people with similar names.

  • The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) links to state and territorial boards in its directory.

  • Medical boards publish licence details and public discipline, meaning punishment for breaking the board's rules. The detail varies by state.

  • Some states use one board for MD doctors and another for DO doctors. Both are types of doctor. A search of a single board may miss the person.

In September 2026, permission generally needs to apply where the patient is physically located during the visit.

A doctor may be licensed or otherwise authorized under that state's rules. There are narrow exceptions, so ask the board about an unclear result.
