Compare the route into care
Explain your health problem and what you hope treatment will help you do. Bring the medicine name too, if you have one.
Ask who will assess you and how a return visit works.
Telehealth means speaking with the person treating you by video or phone, or sending messages online. Ask how the visit allows questions in both directions.
The US drug agency, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), says people receiving care online may not know who prepared their made-to-order medicine.
The place where you are matters
As of September 2026, remote care generally needs a doctor who is licensed or otherwise allowed to practise where the patient is during the visit.
State rules, including narrow exceptions, determine that permission. A licence in the doctor's home state is not the whole check.
Ask how care continues
Medical board guidance calls for tests or an in-person referral when the assessment needs them.
Ask for a way to contact the person caring for you after the visit, and find out who handles medicine questions. Get those answers before comparing the fee.
